Action Trust’s first recruit secures on-going employment
10/01/2012
Joe Cassie, a young ex-offender, has successfully gained on-going employment at a Leicester based engineering company with the support of Action Trust. The aim of Action Trust is to give ex-offenders, those affected by homelessness and armed forces veterans training and employment opportunities through the Action Trust social enterprises. The objective is to give recruits the confidence and skills to move into more permanent employment in their chosen field. Joe’s move to on-going employment is a great success, and proves that the Action business model works.
Action Trust is an innovative collaboration between Action Homeless Leicester, HMYOI Glen Parva, The TREES Group and Apex Works; delivering a range of services to customers throughout Leicestershire. The Action social enterprises currently include – Action Clean, Action Garden, Action Paint and Action Fix and build upon the skills and training offered to people in prison. To date, Action Trust has provided work experience to 13 people and provided employment for eight people from both the ex-offending and homeless backgrounds.
Joe Cassie spent two months volunteering with Action Trust where he demonstrated his commitment to the organisation. Joe was then employed by Action Trust for six months and has worked across the Action businesses. Joe said “As soon as I entered Glen Parva I knew I didn’t want to go back there when I was released, I really wanted to turn my life around. Action Trust has given me a real opportunity to gain employability skills, a reason to get-up in the morning and a chance to earn some money. Action Trust gave me the confidence and discipline to work; I am thrilled that I have now secured on-going employment with a local engineering company”.
Latest figures show that it costs an average of £45,000 per year to keep someone in prison and up to £31,000 per year to keep someone in a homeless shelter. Action Trust actually gives disadvantaged people skills for life to help break the cycles of homelessness and offending which in turn helps to make real savings to the public purse.
Positive procurement changes lives, by making a decision to buy quality and competitively priced services from Action Trust you can support us in transforming the lives of ex-offenders, homeless people and armed forces veterans. BT Supports Social Entrepreneurialism
17/08/2011
Viv Froggatt, a BT Project Manager, has spent the last six months working for the TREES Group, one of the Midlands largest and most successful social enterprises.
With over 30 years of experience working within the structured environment of ‘big business’, her secondment at the TREES Group has been a real ‘eye-opener’ to the social enterprise way of working - creating sustainable businesses that reinvest profits into social goals.
Viv came to TREES as part of BT’s Charitable External Secondment programme, where her skill-set and availability were matched with the opportunity at TREES. Viv has helped to develop and launch Action Clean, a social enterprise to reduce re-offending and homelessness by providing training and employment opportunities to ex-offenders. Action Clean is an innovative collaboration between Action Homeless Leicester, HMYOI Glen Parva the TREES Group and Apex Works and delivers cleaning services to customers throughout the East Midlands.
Viv said “this opportunity has given me the working knowledge and understanding of the way in which social enterprises are created, managed and developed – a real culture shock compared to working in a major organisation such as BT. I didn’t realise that it costs an average of £45,000 per year to keep someone in prison and up to £31,000 per year to keep someone in a homeless shelter. Action Clean actually gives young people skills for life to help break the cycles of homelessness and re-offending which helps to make real savings to the public purse”.
Howard Platts of TREES said “Viv has used her skill set and methodologies, gained at BT, to provide a fresh approach to the development of Action Clean, which is now successfully trading. The key to its’ success has been the development of partnerships, with the organisations bringing a different set of skills to the table – Viv has been instrumental in ensuring that all parties deliver their objectives at the right times. She has now embarked on creating the new social business, Action Bikes, which is envisaged as being a multi-site operation across the East Midlands.”
Viv added “I feel that this secondment has been highly beneficial for all of those involved. Although I will be returning to BT at the middle of August I hope my contribution to the planning and development work will continue to drive the social enterprises managed by TREES for many months to come. This has been a great opportunity which has made me much more socially aware. I challenge anyone to get involved in social enterprise – it’s a fulfilling way to do business and meet some inspiring people”.

Igniting the Spark 2011
89 leaders from the public, private and third sectors attended the Spark “Can partnership with big business change the world” event held at the BT Tower on Monday 17th January 2011.

The panel taking questions
The debate was on the belief that both the social value and business sense in big business partnering with social enterprise could not be broken. The debate was chaired by BBC financial journalist Peter Day, who thoroughly questioned the panel of: -
- Richard Beard, CEO Jericho Foundation
- Mark Graham, Director – Corporate Finance PWC
- Richard Johnson, CEO Serco Welfare to Work
- Douglas Johnson-Poensgen, Managing Director of global defence and security BT
- Maff Potts, CEO Novas Scarman
Despite some vigorous debate and questioning, at the end it was clear that the bond between big business and social enterprise could not be broken and that partnership between the two is the key to success.
Nigel Kershaw from the Big Issue and co-founder of Spark said after the debate, “We’ve had 33 pioneering social enterprises set up after three years. Now we want to extend this programme because this has been proof of concept for real.”
