SHELTERED HOUSING TRANSFORMATION

Older people in Mansfield, Nottinghamshire can look forward to modern, accessible homes as work starts to transform a sheltered housing scheme in the town.
Regeneration and construction company Newlife, part of the TREES Group, has begun the £1.7million makeover of Blyth Court and will also provide training and job opportunities for local people.
The original three-storey sheltered scheme, previously owned by Mansfield District Council, comprised 28 bedsits and seven one-bedroom flats but has housed fewer residents in recent years.
The renovation will see Blyth Court redeveloped in to a bright, modern scheme of 20 larger homes for the over 55s, with four one-bedroom and 16 two-bedroom flats.
The homes will be more accessible for older people and those with disabilities, with plans featuring a scooter store, level access showers, improved layouts, user-friendly fixtures and fittings such as lever taps, and sockets and light switches at mid-level height.
Two ground floor homes are designed to meet the needs of wheelchair users and warden support will also be offered.
In order to offer a range of accommodation options to local people, Newlife is also building eight new two-bedroom bungalows on adjacent land. Six of these will be available for affordable rent and two for low cost home ownership.
John Montague, Group Chief Executive of TREES, said: "We have worked very closely with Mansfield District Council to ensure we deliver modern, high quality accommodation for local residents."
"Residents were consulted throughout the planning process, and have been offered suitable alternative accommodation while the transformation takes place."
The new scheme will be completed in spring 2010.
