Steps School: Mission Completed

4th June 2007

A Leicestershire school for children with cerebral palsy and motor dysfunctions is celebrating after generous businesses spent two weeks transforming the building.

The makeover at STEPS school in Loughborough Road, Shepshed, which began on Monday, 21 May, and was completed on Friday (1 June), was filmed by camera crews from ITV Central.

STEPS is a countrywide charity, providing specialist support to children with motor disorders, enabling them to lead fuller, more active lives.

Thanks to construction company Newlife Regeneration, developer William Davis and architect Halsall Lloyd Partnership amongst others, the school was given an extension and upgrade to the existing teaching area, new kitchen and toilet facilities and a new entrance and reception area.

An existing dilapidated hall was completely renovated to provide a theatre/function room facility that the charity can hire out, producing much needed rental income to help ensure the charity's future.

STEPS patron health and fitness guru Rosemary Conley was down on site every day helping out, and was joined by volunteers and staff from Newlife Regeneration and William Davis.

Group Chief Executive of TREES, John Montague said: "There was still scaffolding up 15 minutes before the opening but we managed to get it all done. It looks great."

He added: "It was quite an emotional evening. There were a few tears when the kids came back in."
